My Book………………..LILAGCS (21)

November 17, 2010

I want to give you an idea of the magnitude of this writing exercise (My Book LILAGCS). To do that I am going to give you an idea what I have left to cover in an outline I have been trying to follow.

This outline picks up where I left off in my High School years at Sac Community High School and continues to my move and now residing in the Philippines.

I have been entering all of this in Microsoft Office Publisher and so far I have just over 90 pages entered. (I have entered it in 12 point type) I have divided it into sections and just started Section 3. I estimate that I am only one third completed so there is a lot more to come.

Each of the following topics has a lot of memories involved (some more and some not so much) but they all are a part of my past. Here is the remaining outline:

….continuation of the Nov. 8th Blog about my decision to go to the Philippines.

Decision to Move to the Philippines

After receiving the telephone call from my brother Tom that Jim was in need of a “Caregiver” for a while I didn’t think very long to decide that not of the volunteer jobs I was working with were more important that my brother.

Volunteer work at Foster Grandparents, U of I Hospital

& Senior Center TV Studio

The fact that I had already made a trip out there to Massachusetts less than 3 months before was also an important part of the decision.

I had already started checking into how I would obtain a US past port and visa to make a trip to the Philippines but had not actually gotten it yet.

                               USA_passport_1976

I was still dealing with what I was going to do with my “stuff” that I still had in my apartment in Coralville, Iowa.

I can remember going down to the greyhound bus depot and by now I had gotten pretty well acquainted with the agent there. I told him that I was going back to Amherst, Massachusetts to help out my brother. The agent told me he could schedule me the same route that I had taken last November and that sounded good to me.

I packed pretty much the same things that I had taken before and in a couple of days I was ready to depart.

This time Jim was going to meet me in Amherst with his friend Dave  at the bus depot.

              Amherst busstop

the lower left portion of the above photo is where the bus stopped

Then I could drive him back to his place.  I would give him a call from Springfield, Massachusetts  which was about 30 minutes from Amherst.

I met a number of new people including a Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic Nun on the trip out plus I didn’t have much trouble getting there.

I recall the route took me through Chicago again but no delays this time then to Cleveland, Cincinnati, and on to Albany New York. I don’t recall the distance from Albany to Springfield, MA was, but it was a pretty straight shot and I remember thinking that this is the last stretch before I get there.

The entire trip took almost 13 hours and actually I didn’t mind it too much. We had lots of stops along the way. As we pulled into Springfield I saw the connecting Peter Pan Bus arriving also.

       PeterpanBus001  PeterpanBus003

Well I got there and Jim and I went on to his home to unpack my stuff. I remember that we stopped to eat at a really cool place just outside of Amherst and had shrimp, French fries and a neat salad bar.

Jim made up a room for me (it was actually his room) and he took the spare bedroom. He also fixed me up so I could hook up my laptop computer and chat with Evelyn in the Philippines when ever I wanted to.

He had taken some time off school to go to Boston to the eye doctor which we did in a day or two after I arrived. I was a bit cautious driving, but did just fine.We got to Boston and found the hospital.

Jim’s daughter, Sarah, met us there and we had lunch together after Jim’s appointment. Jim was told not to lift anything while his eye went through the healing process and his doctor asked me to be sure he followed those orders.

Sarah works tor the Boston Red Sox and runs the large Teletronic scoreboard out in center field of Fenway Park. (see below)

An awesome job. She also told us that she would get tickets for a game so we could go and watch the Red Sox play.

As it turned out, Sarah got us tickets for a baseball game in early April between Boston and the New York Yankees WOW, my two favorite teams!

                         fenwatpark003

After the very thrilling game which Boston won, Sarah gave us a tour of the area where she did all the video recording and a walking tour of the “Green Monster”. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Green Monster, it is a section of the Fenway stadium that is located in left field.

Below are photographs of the “Green Monster”in left field at Fenway

This Blob about my decision to move to the Philippines is much, much more detailed than I first anticipated. This is the third section and I am just getting a good start. I will write more in the next part of moving to the Philippines.

Back to My High School Years

I remember I was warned by Jimmy Joe Molar that  that there were there 3 "bully's" that lived just down the street from where I lived and try to manage to avoid them as much as possible. I did  from May until the beginning of our 8th grade year. (just about 3 months)

It was on my way home after my first day of 8th grade that I encountered the 3 Bully's." There was Terry, Mike and another Terry.

I was riding my bicycle home from school down 12th street when about 3 blocks from my house I heard this person yell "Hey kid!" It turned out to be Terry and I soon recognized he and Mike as being in my 8th grade class from school that day. Well to make a long story longer......

I started playing with them soon after that first time we met. I remember one thing about Terry and Mike that I have never forgotten. They had me convinced that they had this secret club and boy I wanted to become a member real bad.

So gullible as I was (and still am) I allowed them to put me through all sorts of initiation things to become a member.......this lasted all four years of high school and on beyond that. The last time I checked at our 45 reunion I still wasn't a member yet!!!! Ha ha

School in Sac City High School

high-school-01

I have been writing about the preparation to starting High School in the last couple of Blogs. I will now start this part of the Blog with my Freshman year.

High School Freshman Year

I hope I haven’t confused you too much, but I have lost some of the memories of the early part of High School. I am going to pick some of the things I remember and hope I get them in about the right sequence.

Miss Clark’s Algebra Class

I guess the reason I remember Miss Clark’s algebra class is because algebra did not make a bit of sense to me. What I remember is some of the craziness that was done in her class. I am going to try and tell this without mentioning specific people.

One thing I remember we did was pass notes around for all sorts of things. One I remember was the note that said “everyone laugh at 2:30” Well 2:30 came and everyone laughed. Miss Clark would look up from whatever she was doing and act as if she thought she had done something funny and would laugh with the rest of us.

There were also some (2 or 3 students) that would chew up paper in their mouths and when it was just the right consistency they would throw it in the direction of the blackboard that she was writing on…with her back to us.

The paper wad would splatter all over the blackboard and you know I don’t think she ever got mad. But it made all the rest of us slump down in our seats when she turned around and she would ask one of us to come up and clean off the blackboard.

Writing for the School Newspaper

We had a section in the town’s weekly newspaper that was devoted to the school material it was call the “Sentential”. It had articles written by student writers about all sorts of school related things.

I remember there were two of us that use to write (what we considered) humorous short stories. I remember one such on going article was the adventures of “Tough and Steady”.

Tough and Steady were names that we created from a newly created Television animated cartoon series the “Adventures of Rough and Ready”. This was the very first Hanna/Barbera animated cartoon ever.

We also wrote a mystery man article and would produce silly advertising commercials for fictitious products like “Crinkles Cereal”, “Ipunia toothpaste” and lots more. These were all in fun and we like to write them.

We would get excused from study hall to go to the home economics room to work on the articles and would usually get to try some of the baked products from the home economics classes. All I will tell you is that the other classmate was also named David!

We also wrote many skits that we preformed at various functions but the best was the Homecoming skit night. The skit that we contributed a lot of input to won the “Red Jug Award” for the best skit our Freshman year. The first time in the history of the Red Jug that it had been won by the Freshman Class. (Incidentally we also won it the next three years also.)

Those are a few of the main things that I can remember from my Freshman year of High School.

Making Friends with the Other David in my Class

                                         clip_image002clip_image004

The two Davids in High School

I remember I had developed a good relationship with David McCauley, a classmate during that first year of high school. We use to go over to his house and play upstairs in his room. I am not exactly sure of the year, but I know he had gotten a recording machine that we could record our voices and also music from his radio.

I was a strange recording device that used a circular record shaped disk where the recorded message and/or music was stored. We discovered a radio station from DesMoines, Iowa, KIOA, an AM station that if we positioned his radio just right especially towards sunset the music and DJ (Disk Jockey) would come in pretty clear. I remember the Disk Jockey’s name was Doug MacKinnon. There was also a Don MacKinnon, they were brothers and I recall Don was ahead of Doug.

               donmackin   doug-mackinnon-1968

Don MacKinnon at the board                 Doug MacKinnon

I ran across a web site where there were some old audio clips with both of them plus photographs. To check it out, copy and paste the following link to your browser’s address bar so you can check it out…. ( you might be able to just click on the links below:

 http://www.desmoinesbroadcasting.com/kioa/dougmackinnon-profile.html  for Doug
and….
http://www.desmoinesbroadcasting.com/kioa/donmackinnonprofile.html  for Don

If you have “Real Player “ installed (the Free download) you can also hear them during their time on KIOA.

We would pretend to be Disk Jockeys also and record our voices to introduce music, then record music that was being played over his radio program. It was a crazy set up and I may not have it completely correct, but I hope you get a general idea.

Below is a more current clip of the 40th anniversary of Dic Youngs the KIOA Disk Jockey that I use to listen to before he retired and before I came to the Philippines. You have to paste it to your browser address bar to bring it up or click on the link below and click “open hyperlink” You will need to have installed the free version of Real Player to hear it.

This will give you something to listen to and it may bring back old memories.

I will post this now and continue with my high school days next Blog,

Beginning of My High School Days

Moving to Sac City was not too difficult. Mom and dad came to Spencer to pick me up at Aunt Imajeans and Uncle Swede’s place where I had been living for a coupe of months until school was finished for that year.

editor’s note:

I had actually driven through Sac City a few years before the decision was made to more there. My dad had an uncle in Carroll, Iowa that was a very famous eye doctor. and my parents had decided to have him examine my eyes. We drove from Spencer to Carroll and passed through Sac City to get there. My dad’s hat had blown out the car window just west of Sac City on highway 20. We had to stop and go back to get it. That is why I remembered Sac City from my past experience with “Dad’s Hat”

I can remember arriving at our new home on north 12th street in Sac City. It was a duplex and the one thing I will never forget is the comment that my mother made about being able to pound hooks and nails in the walls to hang pictures. (We could not do that in the fire station)

Shortly after I got unpacked a young boy from across the street came over and introduced himself as Jimmy Joe. Then the first thing he did was warn me about 3 "bullys" that lived just down their street from where I lived so I managed to avoid them from May until the beginning of our 8th grade year.(just about 3 months)

It was on my way home after my first day of 8th grade that I encountered the 3 Bully's" It was Terry, Mike and another Terry.

I was riding my bicycle home from school down 12th street when about 3 blocks from my house I heard this person yell "Hey kid!" It turned out to be Terry and I soon recognized he and Mike as being in my 8th grade class from school that day.

Well to make a long story longer......I started playing with them soon after that first encounter on the corner.

I remember one thing about Terry and Mike that I have never forgotten. They had me convinced that they had this secret club and boy I wanted to become a member so bad. So as gullible as I was (and still am) I allowed them to put me through all sorts of initiation things to become a member.......this lasted all four years of high school and on beyond that. The last time I checked at our 45th reunion I still wasn't a member yet!!!! Ha ha ha!

Mom told me that the house where we lived was called a duplex. It had 2 families living there. We lived on the ground floor and another family named the Beaver’s lived on the second floor. There were stairs in back of the house that went up to their place. Directly behind the duplex was a stand alone garage that had been converted into a small apartment. A young couple with a baby lived there.

Attached to the garage apartment was a small shed that we were able to keep garden tools and lawn equipment. Then behind all that was a large garden spot that mom and dad had already planted by the time I got there at the end of May. On the north side of the garage was a raspberry patch that yielded lots on delicious red raspberries.

                                         Go to fullsize image

Our Duplex was located at the edge of the residential area in that part of town. Behind where our house and garden were located was a very large wooded area.

                       clip_image002

We still had our 1940 or 41 Desoto that was dad’s pride and joy. I don’t think we had it too long after we moved to Sac City  because I remember a square black Plymouth when I was learning to drive .

                                    Go to fullsize image

My mother made friends with some ladies that lived in the neighborhood. Floris Miller, Dorothy Beaver , and Mrs. Green. Dorothy was the lady who lived in the apartment above us and a lady named Mrs. Green  lived across the street.

                CoffeeClutch02

I don’t recall how many times they would get together for coffee in the mornings, but I know it was at least once a week and maybe more often.

Floris and Dorothy both had boys about the same age as my 5 year old brother Jim.

I do remember the smell of the sweet rolls and coffee cakes that they would serve at the coffee gatherings.

                                     clip_image002[6]

The boy upstairs from where we lived was named Fred. We call him Freddy. I would play with brother Jim and Freddy a lot. We played a made up game of football all the time.

There were just the three of us, but we would pretend to have opponents and play many hours each day running play after play.

Another thing I would do to occupy my time was take my BB gun and go walking through the wooded area behind our house shooting at tin cans as targets.

Go to fullsize image   Go to fullsize image

Jimmy Joe, the friend from across the street also warned me about playing baseball. I had played a lot of Little League baseball in Spencer and was actually first team 3rd base there. When Jimmy told me that the local Little League team was coached by a Catholic Priest and that he really yelled a lot. I decided to forgo my baseball career.

See you on my next Blog…..

*****************

Just so you won’t think that I left you hanging …..with my decision to move to the Philippines I will pick that story up later …..maybe next weekend.

*******************

Fourth Grade

Going into fourth grade was a bit scary because the fourth grade teacher was the Reynolds’s school principal, Miss Grieves. Everybody talked about how strict and grumpy she was.

It was interesting that Miss Grieves was a very good friend of my Grandma Richs’ and she lived in a house close to my Grandma and Grandpa Rich lived. Before I had a chance to get very scared, Miss Grieves cornered me and ask me to use my bicycle to pick up and return movies from the high school building about 8 blocks away toward the downtown area.

We would have special movies in the gymnasium about 2 to 3 times a week, That meant I was kept pretty busy and the “movie delivery person”. I was also selected to be the crossing guard at the 4th street intersection north of the school building.

I would put on my special orange colored belt and strap and position myself at the corner for about a half hour 3 times a day. It was my job to make sure my fellow students obeyed the rules about crossing the street and to report any automobile violators to Miss Grieves.

Fourth grade was actually a good year as the first three years had been. All of my duties meant I didn’t have to read as much and I found that was a good way to avoid my reading problem. I was promoted to the fifth grade at the end of that school year.

Fifth Grade

My teacher in fifth grade was Miss Devine. Her reputation was that of a very sober person (never smiling) and a teacher that gave a lot of  study assignments. Shortly after I started the third grade my Grandma Logan (Ben) came to me and told me a new renter had just moved into one of their vacant  upstairs apartments in Grandma and Grandpa Bens’ apartment house.

She told me that the new lady was a teacher at the school that I attended. Her name was Miss Devine! WOW, that was cool, now I had first hand access to my teacher through my Grandma and Grandpa. I thought “How could I be so lucky?” Well I don’t think it was luck, as many other things in my life were not left to luck.

I remember she as me to sit up in the front row which enabled me to see and hear better. I remember I read slow, but she seemed to be very understanding of my reading problem and I hadn’t said anything to her about it.

I remember that she would ask me to go to the grocery store for her when she needed some small item. Grandma and Grandpas’ house was pretty close to a small grocery store on Main street. Miss Devine would always give me a small treat for running the errand for her.

Nothing too exciting happened in 5th grade but I was really looking forward to my next grade, sixth grade.

Sixth Grade

Mrs. Ditzell was the only married teacher I had in grade school. The main thing I was attracted to in sixth grade was the art class. I got some really good grades in Mrs. Ditzell’s class as a result of my art and drawing ability.

Again I was able to avoid a lot of reading that I was able to cover up with my art talent. One other thing I remember is that since I was in sixth grade we sixth graders were the “King of the mountain” …we were the seniors of the Reynolds grade school and we liked that status.

My next year, I would be going to a different school. The Lincoln school or West school as it was sometimes referred to. It was on the West side of Main street where I lived and only 5 block to walk as compared to the 9 blocks to Reynolds school.

Seventh Grade

Seventh grade was a big transition for me. It was a big transition in many ways; we had different teachers for the different subjects and would move from one classroom to another unlike staying in the same room for all of out subjects. I had some difficulty with my English class and Geography class due to my poor reading ability.

We had Industrial Arts class taught by Mr. Zart, the first male teacher I ever had. I liked that class because it was mostly “a hands on” class. I participated in Glass etching, Mechanical drawing, photography and was the shore attendant where my classmates would get their supplies. I had to receive their payments and keep track of the money spent.

One very important thing about Mr. Zart was that he had a paddle that he would use on our behinds if we did something not in the rules. I remember I got a swat on the butt once and remembered it.

It was in the latter part of the school year that my parents made the decision to move to a different location. I remember I was very sad because I didn’t think I ever wanted to move away fro the fire station. The decision was made because mom was going to have a baby and dad didn’t think that the fire station was a good place to raise 3 children. My uncle Dale, dad’s oldest brother was a district representation fore the Mobile Gas company and found dad a job as a tank wagon driver in a town called Sac City, Iowa, about 60 miles straight south of Spencer.

I had about two months of seventh grade left when they decided to move. I was fortunate because my Aunt Imajean and Uncle Swede along with my cousin, Webb said that I could live with them to finish out my 7th grade year.

That worked out real great because Aunt Imajean helped me with my English, we were diagramming sentences. At the end of the year I was very good at diagramming sentences.

When the time came for me to move to Sac City with the rest of my family, I did so without very much trouble.

My next Blog will pick up with my move to Sac City and the beginning of my 8th grade year of school.
