The two Davids in High School

I remember I had developed a good relationship with David McCauley, a classmate during that first year of high school. We use to go over to his house and play upstairs in his room. I am not exactly sure of the year, but I know he had gotten a recording machine that we could record our voices and also music from his radio.

I was a strange recording device that used a circular record shaped disk where the recorded message and/or music was stored. We discovered a radio station from DesMoines, Iowa, KIOA, an AM station that if we positioned his radio just right especially towards sunset the music and DJ (Disk Jockey) would come in pretty clear. I remember the Disk Jockey’s name was Doug MacKinnon. There was also a Don MacKinnon, they were brothers and I recall Don was ahead of Doug.

I ran across a web site where there were some old audio clips with both of them plus photographs. To check it out, copy and paste the following link to your browser’s address bar so you can check it out…. ( you might be able to just click on the links below:

 http://www.desmoinesbroadcasting.com/kioa/dougmackinnon-profile.html  for Doug
and….

If you have “Real Player “ installed (the Free download) you can also hear them during their time on KIOA.

We would pretend to be Disk Jockeys also and record our voices to introduce music, then record music that was being played over his radio program. It was a crazy set up and I may not have it completely correct, but I hope you get a general idea.

Below is a more current clip of the 40th anniversary of Dic Youngs the KIOA Disk Jockey that I use to listen to before he retired and before I came to the Philippines. You have to paste it to your browser address bar to bring it up or click on the link below and click “open hyperlink” You will need to have installed the free version of Real Player to hear it.

This will give you something to listen to and it may bring back old memories.

I will post this now and continue with my high school days next Blog,
